Work with Laís de Oliveira

Community as Economic Infrastructure

I build go-to-market systems where customer success creates advocacy, and advocacy creates movement — then hand you a system your team can run without me.

I · Why

Excellence comes from the inside out.

I’ll lead you to your goals, show results, and cover the basics. And I’ll do it without compromising an ounce of what you and your company came into the world for.

On the contrary. We go deeper into your core, your values and the essence of your brand, and use that as the source of the power that drives the results.

My name means “of the people” in Greek. I took it literally.

Fifteen years building communities across four continents: 80+ startup chapters in Asia and Africa, seventy US cities at Timeleft, and twenty-five driver calls in Florida parking lots. Soul in the strategy, rigour in the delivery. Neither one is optional, and the ethos behind the work is the reason both have to be there.

II · In practice

What it looks like on the ground.

GigU is a data intelligence platform for gig economy drivers — people whose income depends on decisions an algorithm makes for them, with almost no visibility into how those decisions get made. I led the US community-led go-to-market from the ground up: the research that established how drivers actually work, the success journey built out of it, and the community architecture and programmes that carried it into market.

Then I built the team to run it without me.

30+qualitative driver calls before a single tactic was chosen
6+in-person events bringing 50+ users face to face with the executive team
100+in-depth survey participants validating what the calls surfaced
17,500behavioural data points — 2,500 users across 7 dimensions — analysed into one GTM strategy

What it produced

  • Focus. Five journey stages, resolving to one pivotal moment of conversion.
  • Behavioural personas. Tracked to real actions that lead to customer success, from conversion through to habit formation.
  • Capacity. A three-person team to carry operations forward, alongside 92 pages of handoff — not theory, but practice in constitutional shape, so the critical decisions stay made.

Before that

  • 80+Startup Grind chapters across APAC and Africa — platform and expansion
  • 70+cities across the US and Canada — growing Timeleft’s largest region
  • 300leaders through the Community Builders Fellowship at On Deck
  • 100+ecosystems — ground-up research, operationalised for Startup Genome
  • Exit8Spaces, a marketplace I founded in Malaysia and sold to FlySpaces

III · Engagements

Ways to work together.

Every engagement draws on the same method. What changes is how much of it you need, and who carries it afterwards.

Engagement

Get me in the room.

Ongoing or sessional. You are buying presence, judgement and accountability — time spent on your problem with me inside it.

Embedded

Fractional Head of GTM

I embed with your team as the person accountable for community-led growth: research, journey, architecture, programmes, and the metrics that tie them together. Ongoing, part-time, senior.

For teams with users, a mission, and nobody owning the arc from discovery to advocacy.

Counsel

Consulting & Advisory

Working sessions for founders, community executives and growth teams applying the method to a live question.

For when you need judgement, not delivery.

Stage

Speaking

Community-led growth, economic agency, the gig economy, movement building, and the neuroscience of belonging — why brains synchronise when people gather in person, and what that means for how you grow.

Keynotes, panels, workshops and offsites.

Deliverable

Outcome-led.

Scoped, with a defined end. You are buying a specific artefact your team owns afterwards — built to the same method, handed over to run without me.

Evidence

Research wave

Interviews, survey and behavioural data, in sequence. You get two-layer personas, findings ranked by evidence density, and a clear statement of what the data does and doesn’t support.

For teams about to make a big decision on assumptions.

Structure

Success journey build

The five-stage journey for your product, with the critical transformation identified, messaging by awareness stage, and a value ladder your product and growth teams can build against.

For messaging that speaks to everyone and lands with no one.

Architecture

Community architecture sprint

Persona pillars, lifecycle, sub-communities with specs and owners, plus the events, ambassador, loyalty and referral playbooks to run them. Delivered as a handoff, not a dependency.

For teams who keep bolting community on instead of building it in.

IV · Voices

What others say.

“Most people who talk about community building want to romanticize it, or worse, they want to make it into a series of actionable ‘steps’ without heart. Lais de Oliveira explains the required actions in amazing detail, but she does it with a sensitivity and a wisdom that can only come from experience. Every page gets better and better.”

Roy H. Williams · author, the Wizard of Ads trilogy

“While Lais has proven herself as an impactful community builder, what makes her unique is she is both a skilled practitioner and a teacher. As a result she understands the theory and the practice of community building, and her insights are rooted in what works.”

Erik Torenberg · founder and chairman, On Deck

“She doesn’t focus on strategies and tactics for building community. She wants to help you, the person building the community, grow into the mindset of being a community builder. This is to understand how to build communities intrinsically. We’ve needed this in the space.”

Samantha “Venia” Logan · founder, Socially Constructed Online

V · The book

The theory under the practice.

Hacking Communities: Cracking the Code to Vibrant Communities is where the method comes from. The “hack” isn’t a growth hack. It’s cracking the code, and the code is personal: you become someone at home with yourself first, secure enough to hold space for other people to find belonging too.

The transformation is inside-out. Not a playbook — the person.

If you want the philosophy before the method, start with the ethos. If you want the architecture, the seven frameworks are the practical layer. And what Hacking Communities is explains the book itself.

VI · Method

The order it runs in: 10 steps to success.

Community work fails when the framework comes first. This is the sequence that puts evidence before architecture, and architecture before programming.

  1. I start with the people, not the plan.

Interviews first, always. Twenty-five calls in parking lots before a single slide. The survey sizes what the calls surfaced. The database confirms or kills it. No finding travels on one instrument alone.

  2. I rank truth by how many voices said it unprompted.

Evidence density decides what becomes strategy. One person’s brilliant insight gets flagged, not promoted.

  3. I separate who your customers are from what they need from you.

Research personas for listening. Behavioural segments for acting. Never demographics as the segment — motivation, behaviour and information ecosystem are what actually predict what someone does next.

  4. I find the critical transformation. The crux

Every product has one stage transition where most of its value and the whole growth engine live. Everything else in the system points at making that transition faster.

  5. I build the success journey in the customer’s language, at their awareness level.

Five stages, each with a belief, a pain, a want, an activation moment and a message. Unaware users reject optimisation talk; experts reject beginner talk. Awareness gives the words, archetype gives the register. Yes, tarot and Eugene Schwartz in the same table. That is the method.

  6. I turn the journey into community architecture.

Who (persona pillars), where (lifecycle), how (sub-communities) — each with a 5P spec and an accountable owner. Lighthouse, Port, City for depth. Closeness Circles from network to core. The outer ring runs on transaction; the inner rings run on belonging.

  7. I ship the programmes, not the deck.

Local events of twelve to eighteen people, core users first, no pitch, follow-up within 48 hours. Ambassadors built from the easiest, highest-impact contributions. Loyalty designed from measured behavioural turning points, not from rewards.

  8. I concentrate. I don’t spread.

Network effects compound inside a local market. Every initiative gets one question: does this concentrate or dilute our resources?

  9. I hand over a system, not a dependency.

What exists, where it lives, who holds it, which decisions not to re-litigate, and what the evidence doesn’t yet support — flagged in the open.

  10. I keep every promise made to a participant.

Every reward logged, every commitment closed. People gave you their time. That’s a debt, and paying it is the brand.

Start with a conversation.

Bring the growth question you keep circling. I’ll tell you what I’d want to know first, and whether the method fits. No pitch.

Most engagements begin exactly this way.
